The Path to Change
The Theory of Change underpins an organization's Impact Model, which helps demonstrate and communicate impact. It describes how and why a particular intervention is expected to lead to desired long-term impacts. In practice, this theory is often expressed through two key tools: the Problem Tree analysis and the Logic Model.
The Problem Tree analysis serves as the diagnostic component. It visually maps out the central problem, breaking it down into its root causes and effects. By doing so, it identifies where the organization’s interventions can be most effective. This detailed mapping helps clarify the underlying issues that need to be addressed, forming the starting point of the Theory of Change.
Building on the problem’s causes and sub-causes, the Logic Model translates the Theory of Change into a structured pathway, explaining the sequence from inputs and activities to outputs, outcomes, and ultimately the impact. The Logic Model not only shows the “if-then” relationships (i.e., if we invest in certain activities, then we expect specific outputs and outcomes) but also incorporates the assumptions behind these linkages. The Logic Model makes the Theory of Change tangible, measurable, and open to monitoring and evaluation.

“My theory of change is that there are already millions of people working day in and day out on the ground to deliver on promises on global change. We need to strengthen those institutions and help those people in the field.”

Theory of Change Basics:
A Practical Primer
"Theory of Change Basics" is a primer on the Theory of Change (ToC) methodology, providing a structured approach for planning and evaluation. It emphasizes defining long-term goals and mapping out necessary preconditions in a causal framework. The document highlights key components of ToC, including identifying assumptions, developing rationales, and selecting strategic interventions. Furthermore, it details the importance of measurable indicators to track progress and ensure accountability. The primer also stresses the significance of quality review throughout the ToC construction to make sure your theory is plausible, doable, and testable. Finally, the document advocates for a narrative summary to communicate the theory's key elements.
