Values Chains can be seen as Guilds
Living systems are the foundation of any regenerative approach. Unlike mechanistic models, living systems are dynamic, interconnected, and evolve collaboratively. Understanding the logic of living systems allows for structuring regenerative initiatives that respect natural cycles, enhance resilience, and promote diversity. In the context of regenerative projects, integrating a living systems perspective means observing and interacting with the flows of energy, resources, and information within an ecosystem, rather than imposing fragmented solutions disconnected from the local reality.
This systems-thinking approach extends beyond ecological frameworks and directly informs business strategy and organizational development. Businesses that operate in alignment with living systems principles tend to be more adaptable, innovative, and resilient in the face of change. By designing organizations and business models as living systems, entrepreneurs can create enterprises that evolve organically, build strong networks of mutual support, and thrive in uncertain environments. This is where the concept of ecological guilds becomes essential.
Ecological guilds function similarly to value chains in business. In nature, guilds are composed of different species that perform complementary roles, enhancing the overall ecosystem’s resilience and productivity. In a business context, value chains represent networks of organizations, suppliers, and stakeholders that collaborate to create and distribute value. Just as a healthy guild optimizes relationships among its members to strengthen the ecosystem, a well-structured value chain fosters synergies between businesses, suppliers, and consumers to maximize efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. Regenerative enterprises that adopt a guild-based approach can create value chains that are not only economically viable but also socially and ecologically beneficial. Developing and strengthening guilds within a regenerative project is essential to ensuring sustainability and adaptation to local dynamics.

Applications of Living Systems Theory
This 1995 article by James Grier Miller and Jessie L. Miller explores applications of living systems theory, a framework for understanding the structure and processes of living and nonliving systems across different levels of complexity (from cells to supranational systems). The authors present a multitude of case studies demonstrating the theory's use in diverse fields like psychology, ecology, economics, and organizational management. These applications include modeling self-organization, adaptability, and information processing, and using the framework for diagnosis and improvement of system processes. The article highlights cross-level research, seeking common principles across different system levels, and proposes the development of integrated models and methodologies for systems analysis. Ultimately, the authors advocate for the unifying potential of living systems theory in various scientific disciplines.
